“Develop more complex concepts and ideas surrounding cinematic techniques within the contemporary art world” Gemma Mountain, 2009
Throughout my resent work I have played around with the notions of new verses old technology and vice versa. To combine new/old technology with Hi-Lo technology is something that I feel interacts well within my practice. I originally followed the path involving the use of Hi-Lo technologies as I focused my practice around materials and mediums. The artwork that I applied to these materials affected the way in which I simplified the process of HI-Lo technology.
As I moved on from these ideas I began to look at how I could use HI-Lo technology within the boundaries of old and new. After much artistic struggle with my ideas and thought process I realised that the one constant within my work focused around cinema and cinematic techniques, something that I had been experimenting with throughout my entire degree. After looking at the cinematic work of Dziga Vertov’s “Man with a Movie Camera” I became much more interested in the use of erasure and Deconstruction within my work.
As my background involves literary skills as well as artistic capabilities, I would like to include literary concepts and theories, as they tend to share many of the same ideologies’. While studying English theory on the Contemporary Writing side of the course I became aware of the connections and similarities between certain literary theorists and Art theorists. In particular I have been looking into the works and writings of Derrida and Pierre Mackerey on their relevant topics that include Deconstruction and Criticism. I find these topics interesting as I can apply them into art methods even though Derrida states “Deconstruction can not be used as a method”, I found his statement quite intriguing as it seems that as an artist I am always searching for hidden meanings and issues within my work. Too bring these two ideas of practicing together I channelled my ideas through photography, looking into shadows and light as well as the literal and literary space between the work.
At the minute I am currently focusing on the use of stop frame animation in order to experiment in film techniques as well as cinematic techniques. My practice at the moment is centred on cinematic styles and the interpretations of old into new then the transition back to old style projection. To link in to these cinematic concepts I have decided to experiment with old Cine Movie Cameras, I would quite like to look into altering the film roll after filming my pieces so that I can work on the film using Lo-technology juxtaposed against the Hi-technology.
